Alumni Re-organization
REORGANIZATION OF THE KEWANNA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
500 Attend First Kewanna High School Alumni Reunion
KEWANNA, IND.
SPRING - 1953
On Saturday evening the Kewanna high school alumni held a reunion in the gymnasium
of the school building. The gym was beautifully decorated with baskets of spring flowers,
school colors, little red school houses, spelling books, old fashion slates and miniature
graduates in caps and gowns.
After appropriate music by the Kewanna high school band, the invocation was asked
by Fred Graffis. A three-course dinner was served to approximately 500 guests, during
which the band played several selections under the direction of Charles Byfield.
John Urbin, acting as master of ceremonies, gave, in a few well chosen words, a welcome
to all present and told how the class of '37 had taken it upon themselves to invite all the
alumni since 1900 to join with them in a reunion at this time. Then in her charming manner
Helen Louise Shadle, of the class of '47, sang 'Danny Boy' with Mrs. Nada Henning at the
piano.
Judd Crabill, Union Township trustee, then introduced the faculty, followed by Carl
Harmon, principal, giving a brief talk and introducing Hal Peck, coach and sponsor of
the graduating class. Mr. Peck then introduced the class and Ralph V. Johnston, member
of the class of '21 and former township trustee, and now Clerk of Fulton Circuit Court,
welcomed the class into the alumni with a response by Marilyn Zellers, a member of the
class of '53. Mr. Urbin then called on Cecil Grayson, principal from 1912 to 1914, who
gave a short talk, as did Maude Conrad, a former music teacher for many years.
Miss Delilah Kingery was then called forward and honored for having taught in the
school for 34 years. She was presented with a gift and a corsage by Jack Vigus who was
a member of her first class. Burdette Garner, a member of the class of '34 then sang 'My
Task' which was well received.
A nominating committee, having been chosen by the class of '37, reported and
recommended the alumni be reorganized and nominated the following officers: Fred
Graffis, President; Ralph V. Johnston, Vice President; Dorothey Kaley, Secretary and
Treasurer. They were all elected unanimously. Next John Urbin introduced each class,
beginning with the class of 1900, which only has two members left; Harry Heimburger
and Clyde LeMasters. Mr. LeMasters expected to attend, but was unable to do so on
account of illness. After responses from the various classes the reunion closed by singing
'God Be With You 'Til We Meet Again'. There are graduates living in Pennsylvania, No.
Carolina, Illinois, Michigan and the west.
J. B. LeMasters, father of Clyde LeMasters, taught the 7th and 8th grade in the
Kewanna schools and later became the first principal of the high school.
The dinner was prepared and served by the women of the Kewanna Methodist and the
Church of Christ. The class of '37 extended their thanks to the ladies of the churches, the
Catholic church, I.O.O.F. and Masonic lodges for their co-operation in helping make the
affair a success, and to Charles Byfield for providing music during the dinner hour.
