Swiss Stories
Swiss Stories
Early stories of Switzerland are written in German, French & Italian. Alfred Hilfiker recommends reading Swiss author Jeremias Gotthelf as his stories describe the rural society of the time when Jacob Hilficker left his Homeland for America in 1817. Although he wrote many short stories, we who speak and read only English are unable to enjoy them unless we find English translations. The following three stories translated by Robert Godwin-Jones of Virginia Commonwealth University are just that. Enjoy!

How Joggeli Seeks a Wife  (1840) by Jeremias Gotthelf

The Broommaker of Rychiswyl  (1851) by Jeremias Gotthelf

Elsi, the unusual Farm Maid  (1843) by Jeremias Gotthelf
